New MAC Lab Opens at Encore Academy

Reynoldsburg Encore Academy formally opened its MAC Lab last week, putting precision tools in the hands of students interested in graphic design.

The school held a ribbon cutting Friday, Sept. 25, opening the lab and its 60 iMac computers for student use.

Encore teacher and Central Ohio Technical College adjunct teacher Amy Fihe said the iMacs will be used in the visual design and imaging pathway at Encore. She said this is the fifth year of a partnership between Encore and COTC's Digital Media Design program.

"Encore was originally designed to have a visual arts and communication strand or pathway that would lead students to a college with a two-year degree program in graphic design," Fihe said. "Currently, Encore offers seven semester hours of credit toward that degree, taught by a high school teacher/adjunct -- me."

She said five more semester hours are available for students who go on to attend classes at the Pataskala branch of COTC, to be taught by an adjunct from the college.

"We are thankful that the district is supporting the partnership by providing lab spaces that are comparable to collegiate and industry standards," Fihe said.
