Reynoldsburg First Graders Meet Online Mentors For The First Time

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio - On Tuesday, tutors - who worked with first graders in the Reynoldsburg City School District this past school year - got to meet the students, face to face, for the first time.

Reynoldsburg teachers used a new program at the start of this school year to teach reading called TutorMate.

TutorMate opens a door for busy professionals who can carve out 30 minutes a week to tutor a student online, but not the additional time needed to travel to a neighborhood school.

With a computer, phone line and software in a classroom, tutors call in each week and meet with their student over the phone, reading stories and doing word exercises together on their respective computer screens.

Reynoldsburg City Schools says this past year it had 130 tutors working with students in the following elementary schools:

  • Slate Ridge
  • French Run
  • Rose Hill

A tutor, sitting at a desk in an office, dials the classroom. A student answers and for the next half hour, the tutor and student work together on an interactive screen on their respective computers at the same time.

The tutor works with the same student once each week for 30 minutes throughout the school year. At the end of the year, everyone gets a chance to meet face to face when tutors travel to schools for an end-of-the-year get-together.
